Wigan Wargames was established in July 2003 by a small group of friends. We are all keen gamers, but sadly space was lacking, prompting us to find a new venue.
The solution (as is usual with these things) turned up under our noses and the St.Aidan's 27th Scout's, (based in Winstanley, Wigan), very kindly offered us the use of their scout hall, and so Wigan Wargames Club was born.
The building itself under went renovations in 2007 an now provides ample room for 6 six foot by four foot tables, has its own kitchen and toilets as well as an entertainment system.
The club represents a good mix of people and has over the years expanded its membership base, with a varying age range of 12 -50, and we have put great emphasis on creating a relaxed environment
As is typical with many organised gaming groups, Games Workshop games forms a typical entry point to the group, since it is with these games most members started out playing games and have collections for. That said those who have been around a while longer have expanded their gaming horizons. Other games such as Flames of War, Warmachine, Hordes, AK47, along with many different boardgames all have at place at Wigan Wargames, but if thats not your things don't worry, we will play any game we can get figures for.
Backing up our gaming the club has a large selection of terrain for all types of gaming, and this is stored onsite, so it does not have to be lugged around.
Another aspect open to members is the option not to game on club night as we always have painting and modelling tables set up and on the go, so you can find space and quiet time to get on with those projects that might otherwise have to run the gauntlet of ordinary life.
2007 has seen another aspect open up Wigan Wargames, that being Boardgames. We don't mean the ordinary run of the mill Monopoly type games either! The game we play can be Wargames in themselves, such as Battlelore or Memoir'44, or more action based such as Doom or Formula De, or games that require a little more thought, such as Race for the Galaxy, Agricola, Saint Petersburg, Blue moon City, Carcasonne, or Puerto Rico. What ever it is Wigan Wargames club offers the space to play and willing opponents.
The Group meets every Friday evening with the hall typically being open from 7pm, till late, at the St.Aidan’s 27th Scout Building, Highfield Grange, Winstanley, Wigan.
Outside of the Friday meeting we also have access to the hall on Saturdays and Sundays upon request (and usually a weeks notice).
Introducing yourself to the Wigan Wargames Group.
Wigan Wargames operates an active forums found here, where members can chat about things related/unrelated to the club, organise games, and participate in campaigns. If you are new to the club it is advised that you register on our forums and introduce yourself on the "Welcome to Wigan Wargames" board. If you wish to take it a step further and try to arrange a game, then the "War Room" is the place to ask.

Persons under 16 years of age are asked to have a parent or guardian contact Wigan Wargames organiser, Craig Grady, via the contacts page before attending Wigan Wargames, we ask this to ensure the parents/guardians of the person's under 16 are aware of their location.
All junior members under 16 years of age, unless occompanied by an adult, are required to leave by 10pm.
Membership and Fees.
As with everything in life you have to pay, as a group we make a £20 donation to the 27th Scouts every time we use their facilities. To help cover this donation we ask members to pay a fee. Not only does this help us make a donation to the Scouts, but it also goes towards purchasing tea and coffee, and terrain items for the clubs use.
YOUR FIRST TIME IS ALWAYS FREE.
One thing Wigan Wargames has always done is allow people to come along and see if they like the club, so we never ask you to pay anything the first night you come along to the club. Just drop in, have a chat and a brew with like minded people and see if you want to come again and game with us.
There are two groupings of member for the club, adult, and junior.
Adult Members.
Adult members pay £3 per attendance.
Junior Members.
Junior members are those under 18 years of age. Fees for Juniors are half the value of Part time members (£1.50 per attendance).
Club Rules. Last Updated 16/08/09
We currently only have 5 rules for our group, all members are asked to obey them. Failure to comply may result in exclusion from the club.
1. You pay your fees promptly upon arrival at the club whether or not you plan to game (currently to Craig Grady, or another nominated member in Craig's absense). ATTENDANCE REQUIRES PAYMENT, as we still need to pay our donation to the scouts and re-supply the club with equipment as needed, even if members intend to game or not.
Full time members are asked to pay £10/£5 on the first friday of the month.
Part time members are asked to pay their £3/£1.50 upon arrival.
2. All members are responsible for placing rubbish in the bin bag provided, ensuring the hall is kept tidy, and the floor is swept at the end of the night.
The hall has no waste disposal facilities and as such waste must be removed from the building at the end of the night by a keyholder, failure to comply with this is unacceptable as it could jeopardise the groups position using the hall. The hall floor must be swept at the end of the gaming night.
3. The Scout hall is a none smoking building, smokers are asked to go outside of the building and dispose of any waste relating to smoking away from the building.
4. Everyone makes a brew. Don't be selfish, but feel free to limit it to the table you are gaming or painting on.
5. Trading in the hall. Paying Members (see rule 1) wishing to trade miniatures and/or take advantage of the clubs 20% discount on Games Workshop products may do so freely, else it is asked that business be conducted off and away from the premises, after all we are a club and not a games store.
